Oaklands School

Oaklands School

Oaklands is a school for pupils from F2 to year 6. We provide a communication rich environment focusing on TEACCH, PECS and Makaton as well as modelling speech at a level appropriate to each individual. We currently cater for 101 pupils, all of who have Interaction and Communication difficulties, often linked to being on the Autism Spectrum. Our curriculum is based on the International Primary Curriculum, although adaptation is necessary as all pupils follow an Individualised Learning Programme, driven by an Individualised Target Plan. Outdoor learning in place of free play takes place in the morning. This requires intensive support from skilled classroom staff. We have nine classes each with eight pupils and four staff, and, three classes with ten pupils and three or four staff. Additional Intervention is provided when identified by the rigorous assessment process carried out every ten weeks: this is rag rated, discussed by senior leadership and staff and monitored carefully. Reporting to parents is twice yearly by meetings, with an Annual report.

After school clubs, with transport home where necessary, are offered to all pupils on a rolling programme: these often include sensory and soft play, music, movement and dance and messy play.
